Halloween Verse: Welcoming the Dead

Sunlight glistens on the edge of my knife
Sharpened to sever, I carve through flesh
A mouth, a nose, two little black eyes
Precision is essential to win the best prize

I stand back reviewing my first masterpiece
A wave of satisfaction, heavenly release
A slice from here, a slither from there
It has to be perfect before I can share

One final blow
I slice off the top of his head
Placing inside
A light to welcome the dead

  1. Like the fact that it's actually a very vivid poem! The type that you -- inevitably -- have to think about it throughout the day because like a movie, you picture the sunlight against the knife, the task it does so meticulously, nose, eyes, the getting in the flesh ... Well done! Mission accomplished! 👌🏽

    1. Dear Maria, thank you so much for your kind words. I love the line about being like a movie, I try to run things through my mind in that way when I write. I hope you have a great weekend and my apologies for the delay in responding. Cate x
